Atmos Energy Controlled Gas Release Near Spur 100 This Morning — Rotten Egg Smell Is Expected
Crews will vent natural gas from an isolated section of pipeline between 8 and 10 a.m. Monday. Service should not be interrupted.

Atmos Energy maintenance notice for Oct. 5, 2026, shared by the City of Kerrville.
If you smell rotten eggs near Spur 100 this morning or anywhere within the vicinity, it's most likely planned maintenance.
Atmos Energy crews will do pipeline maintenance near 379 SH-100 Spur in Kerrville from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. today, Monday, Oct. 5. As part of the work, they will remove natural gas from an isolated section of pipeline with a controlled release. The City of Kerrville posted the notice at 7:30 a.m.
People nearby may hear noise from the work. They may also smell mercaptan, the additive that gives natural gas its "rotten egg" odor. Atmos describes the procedure as safe, standard industry practice. In its notice, the company calls mercaptan a harmless odorant.
Atmos says customers should not lose natural gas service while the work is underway. The company says it has notified city staff, public officials, 911 operators and emergency responders ahead of time.
When it isn't the maintenance
The planned release covers only the area near Spur 100 and only the 8 to 10 a.m. window. If you smell gas somewhere else, or after 10 a.m., treat it as a possible leak. Atmos advises people to leave the area right away, then call 911 and Atmos Energy's 24-hour emergency line at 866-322-8667 once they're a safe distance away.
For questions about the maintenance, call Atmos Energy customer service at 888-286-6700.
