San Antonio Man Arrested in Undercover Kerr County Meth Sting Faces First-Degree Felony

KERR COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

KERRVILLE, Texas — A San Antonio man is facing severe state charges following an undercover narcotics operation conducted by the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Special Operations Division earlier this week.

On Tuesday, October 20, investigators seeking to disrupt the local drug trade made contact with 36-year-old Aaron Ray Salinas through an online chat group. According to the KCSO, Salinas agreed to travel from San Antonio to Kerr County to sell and deliver methamphetamine to undercover investigators.

Upon Salinas’ arrival at the predetermined location, law enforcement executed a felony traffic stop. A probable cause search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded a bag containing 10.2 grams of methamphetamine.

Salinas was taken into custody without incident, booked into the Kerr County Jail, and charged with the Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 1. His bond was set at $75,000.

The Legal Reality of Drug Distribution in Texas

Because Salinas was allegedly caught attempting to sell 10.2 grams of methamphetamine, his charge falls into the 4 to 200-gram threshold—a First-Degree Felony in Texas.

While the state judicial system often provides diversion programs or probation for low-level users found in simple possession, Texas law takes a firm and aggressive stance against the distribution of narcotics. A First-Degree Felony delivery charge carries a mandatory minimum of 5 years in state prison, with a maximum penalty of 99 years or life, alongside fines up to $10,000.

Statewide judicial data underscores the gravity of these charges. Prosecutors actively pursue prison sentences for those bringing high-level narcotics into communities, and jury acquittals in Texas felony cases remain exceedingly rare—accounting for less than one percent of all case resolutions. Defendants facing first-degree distribution charges face substantial legal hurdles to avoid significant prison time.

KCSO Maintains Firm Stance on Public Safety

Sheriff Larry Leitha commended the operation, emphasizing that the department remains steadfast in its mission to intercept narcotics and hold traffickers accountable.

“Our Special Operations Division continues to be very active in confronting threats to public safety in Kerr County,” Sheriff Leitha stated. “Whether coming from inside our county or traveling here to engage in the drug trade, our team continues the long-term work of removing dangerous drugs from our county and bringing cases for full prosecution. Our streets and county are safer through the work of our KCSO Special Operations Division.”

As in all criminal cases, the KCSO noted that charges may be added or modified prior to trial, and all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
