Kerrville Man Critically Wounded in West McFarland Street Shooting; Police Say Resident Appears to Have Acted in Self-Defense

KPD says the man who was shot is accused of brandishing a knife after going to the home to confront the resident over an alleged debt

KERRVILLE — A 39-year-old Kerrville man is in critical condition after he was shot Thursday morning at a residence in the 100 block of West McFarland Street, and police say the 47-year-old resident who shot him appears to have acted in self-defense.

Kerrville Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting at the residence at about 8:03 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, according to a KPD press release. Arriving officers found the man in front of the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers rendered first aid, and the man was taken by ambulance to Peterson Regional Medical Center before being flown to a trauma center in San Antonio. He underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition, police said. No further information about his condition is available.

According to the initial investigation, the 39-year-old man went to the residence to confront another man over an alleged debt. The resident, a 47-year-old Kerrville man, met him at the door. Police said the man who was shot is accused of brandishing a knife, and he was shot by the resident during the confrontation.

The resident is cooperating with detectives and has been interviewed. Based on the preliminary information available to detectives, it appears he acted in self-defense, according to KPD.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be sent to the 216th District Attorney's Office for review and consideration.

Police have not released the names of either man.
